What are the facts?
Dressage and Dressage Freestyle attract a huge audience; its not only a worldwide sport but also an Olympic sport.
The adjudication - particularly in the Freestyle - shows clear errors in the measurable results; this is a subjective evaluation which is becoming increasingly problematic. It is impossible to measure the synchronisation between the music and the combination of horse and rider with the human eye and ear. In order to achieve a ride in perfect harmony; measuring synchronicity should be the first goal. (Synchronisation is one of the main aims of the Freestyle as stated by the FEI). Dressage judges are not schooled musicians or musicologists; there's a huge lack of musical knowledge. You can't expect a dressage judge, highly trained in many aspects of the horse sport, to be a music specialist as well. However dressage judges should be trained to acquire musical judgment skills and should be provided with a bigger artistic input and instruction. This might be done by musicians, musicologists and specialists in the Freestyle to music who have a track record in this field.
There are only a handful of professional 'Freestyle' composers but they have demonstrated over the last 14 years that the Freestyle can be performed with synchronisation and harmony, whilst also showing the important added component of drama. Some riders have shown great skill in performing to the custom, rhythmic Freestyles which have been produced for them.
What is the solution?
The EQ-Musync soft & hardware system. (Equestrian Music Synchronisation or simply EQM.) EQM is an 'all in one' software/hardware system that provides all of the following required information in real time during the 6 minute long Dressage Freestyle to music resulting in:
- a 100% objective analysis of the music used
- a 100% objective analysis of synchronisation between the music and the combination of horse and rider in all the performed gaits and transitions.
What is the result?
Judges will receive the EQM horse data analysis (HDA) and musical data analysis (MDA) reports one minute after the test; scored in percentages (HDA) and marked in qualifications (MDA). Judges can now concentrate more easily and focus completely on the total harmony between rider and horse, the degree of difficulty, the artistic interpretation, the choreography, the regularity, the rhythm and pulse of the horse/rider combination. All variations which are measurable in this aspect (and there are many) in relationship to the music used and the chosen lines (choreography) are covered for the maximum measurable portion by EQM.
With EQM all unquantifiables will disappear. This means an accurate, measurable and scientific result and it will soon become available; a standard which will satisfy every rider, trainer, coach, judge, national and international federation, spectator, stakeholder and sponsor. EQM can also be used for training and educating dressage judges in the near future.
How does EQM work?
With an invisible 'horse data tracking system' which measures the horse, and a software system which measures (and plays) the music during the test, all done without seeing or hearing it, without any disturbance of the performed test for the rider/horse combination and audience, thereby comparing the horse data with the musical data analysis, resulting in a 100% proved score.
(EQM soft & hardware is under patent and registration; we cannot give full details.)
When can EQM be operational?
There is a full working soft & hardware system, under patent and under registration. A so-called preliminary version of this software can be operational as early as 2010 at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. The results can be compared with WEG 2006 Aachen and WEG 2002 Jerez and the dressage results of the past 12 years at the Olympic Games.
The final version of this revolutionary invention could be foolproof for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Who is behind the EQM Team?
Composers, producers, musicians and engineers (all specialists in music and image, film and broadcast productions), software designers, data specialists, musicologists, dressage judges, sport-judging experts, dressage journalists, dressage experts, dressage riders, trainers and coaches.
What is the mission of the EQM Team?
To take the musical and music-technical part of dressage judging seriously, with all the necessary equipment possible, without disturbing or changing the Freestyle performance the way it is and should be.
To take the judges seriously. With the help of EQM system the Judges can now focus on All the terms of the scale of training, the harmony between rider and horse, the degree of difficulty, the artistic interpretation as well on the performed choreography.
To improve the adjudication in these very important parts of the Freestyle to music, with an accurate, measurable and scientific result presented as a percentage.
EQM supports and at the same time simplifies the complex adjudication of the jury members in the Freestyle. The value judgment which is given by the jury for the artistic elements is thereby intensified.
Without having to concentrate on the visual complexity (ear and eye combination) of the harmony and synchronisation between music and performance, the jury members can, with the help of EQM, rely 100% on a secure measurement in this most testing part - that which makes the Freestyle synchronised and is one of the main essences - so that everything falls into place.
Does the EQM Team have other plans?
Yes, the EQM Team is already working on an improved Freestyle Music Dictionary, based on the EQM-MDA (Music Data Analysis).
Also the EQM Team is developing an EQM-Choreography Software Programme that can be implemented in EQM soft & hardware. For this new software the EQM Team has developed a revolutionary labanotation for horse-dressage gaits and movements.
